| In Australia,
we have introduced a new classification of chemicals called Workplace
Hazardous Substances. These are substances which have the potential
to affect peoples health both in the short and long-term. These
hazardous substances include toxins, skin and respiratory sensitises,
carcinogens, etc.
Model regulations for the control of workplace hazardous substances
were developed by Worksafe Australia in the early 1990s and
have been picked up by the various state jurisdictions.
The purpose of the regulations is to eliminate
or minimise peoples exposure to hazards within their workplace.
The key questions regarding "What you should
know about hazardous substances" are:
- Is the substance listed on the site chemical inventory?
- Is the substance hazardous to your health?
- Is there a current MSDS?
- Does the label comply with legal requirements?
- Have the users of the material been trained in the correct procedures?
- Has there been a workplace assessment to determine the appropriate use of the hazardous substance?
- Is the correct Personal Protective Equipment available and worn?
- Are there emergency provisions?
- Is there an appropriate exposure monitoring program?
