Dangerous Goods are an internationally recognised
sub-set of hazardous materials. Dangerous Goods are acute and physico-chemical
hazards that may threaten life, health, property or the environment
in a single incident.
Storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods are governed by
Australian legislation and regulated in all States and Territories.
Key elements of the Dangerous Goods Code include:

A classification system of nine major classes of dangerous goods
based on the principal hazard. These classifications are explosives
(Class 1), flammable liquids (Class 2), flammable solids, substances
liable to spontaneous combustion and substances that in contact
with water emit flammable gasses (Class 4), oxidizing substances
and organic peroxides (Class 5), toxic and infectious substances
(Class 6), radioactive substances (Class 7), corrosive substance
(Class 8) and miscellaneous dangerous goods (Class 9).
A numbering system (UN numbers) which assists in rapid substance
identification in an emergency;
A system for identifying level of risk (Packing Group);
Approved, performance rated packages;
Hazard labelling and placarding;
Separation of incompatible materials;
Provision of emergency information.
Important issues to consider are:

Does DG storage on site meet the appropriate requirements?
Is a DG manifest established and maintained on site?
Is there adequate separation from ignition sources?
Is ventilation adequate?
Is the premise secure from unauthorised access?
Is there an appropriate emergency plan in the event of fire or
major spill?
Is there spill containment?
Are there adequate placarding, signs and labels?
